artist statement
Experimenting with different materials and mediums, I am commenting on my surroundings either by woollen street art pieces or painting in my studio.
My paintings celebrate women and their imagination, joy of existence and freedom to create their own reality. I am praising moments of leisure and doing nothing, times of happiness and fleeting pleasures. While seemingly doing nothing, there is a whole world of thoughts going on in the characters’ minds. They are creating their own reality, enjoying life as it is and imagining what it could be.
In my street art crochet pieces I am using simple imagery that can either be just playful or deeply emotional.
I am challenging the preconceived notion of crochet as typically women's craft being mere symbol of domesticity and quiet pastime, devoid of artistic value, by bringing it out into the streets.
bio
Ivona Martinčić was born in Croatia. She has an MA in French and English Language and Literature. She has also completed her studies in interior design at KLC School of Design, London.
Under the name Voona (meaning wool in Croatian and being her anagram) she makes woven tapestries and crochet street art installations. Her wool installations could be seen both in Zagreb and London. She is best known for her Broken Heart crochet graffiti piece that became a symbol of hope in Zagreb after the earthquake and during the pandemic.
Her art honours the power of imagination, playfulness and freedom to create and shape the world around us. Her canvas pieces combine mixed media, acrylic and oil paint and sometimes include wool elements. She likes to experiment with unusual materials in unexpected places to create a new meaning or emotion. Her process of painting sometimes starts with a real scene that sparks an idea and then she creates a setting to be photographed and afterwards painted. Other times she digitally creates an idea that is later further developed during the process of painting. Similarly, her street art installations start with an existing wall or situation she comments on with simple crochet imagery.
She lives between Zagreb and London, the city she calls her soulmate. "Home is a feeling. I create my home wherever I feel I belong. It can be anywhere in the world."
